  1. Charles Munch / Boston Symphony Orchestra
    Legacy

Charles Munch / Boston Symphony Orchestra

    £ 16.50

Programmed by Munch during his years at the Boston Symphony but never recorded, his renderings of the two works featured on this DVD are exciting and spontaneous with the kind of precision and flair we have come to expect from the BSO under the buoyant direction of their charismatic Music Director. The ICA Classics Legacy series represents an historic account of performances by some of the world’s greatest artists. This DVD features some of the earliest televised concerts with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and their Music Director, Charles Munch.   While the material has been restored using the greatest care and state-of-the-art techniques, certain visual artefacts and distortions remain in some instances due to the age of the film. Despite this, it remains of exceptional musical interest and historic value and is released here for the first time on DVD.More details

  2. Herbert von Karajan (2 CDs)
    Legacy

    Herbert von Karajan (2 CDs)

    £ 14.99

This 2CD set is sourced from the Music Preserved Archive. The combination of Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic playing Mozart and Bruckner drew a ‘packed and raving audience’ according to Neville Cardus in The Guardian. The Bruckner Symphony No.7 received great acclaim from the Daily Telegraph, with a review headlined ‘Noble Height in Bruckner: Vibrant Vienna Philharmonic’, and the critic Donald Mitchell writing ‘London has not heard a Bruckner performance of this quality for years’. Mitchell went on to add that the music-making was ‘undoubtedly touched by interpretative genius’. In his booklet essay, Richard Osborne notes that ‘the performances of both Mozart and Bruckner are quicker here than any of Karajan’s studio performances … they are also freer in places and given to a number of astonishing build-ups of power’. This is the first CD release of this material. More details

  4. Kurt Sanderling
    Legacy

    Kurt Sanderling

    £ 9.99

Sanderling enjoyed live performances far more than the studio, something he discusses in the interview about his career and his great admiration for Otto Klemperer, featured on this CD. This live concert performance in brilliant stereo in Newcastle proves the point. Sanderling's German tradition brings great insights to Bruckner's 3rd Symphony, though he conducted the composer infrequently (Symphony No.7 being the exception). It is a rare recording has never been issued before. More details
