More details

Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau (1903–1991) was described at various times as ‘Prince’, ‘Emperor’ and ‘King’ of the keyboard, conveying something of the awe in which he was held. Few artists of any generation prompted such consistent praise, a pianist who embraced virtually every part of the repertoire, including marathon cycles of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin and Liszt. Both these broadcast recordings are sourced from the original WDR tapes and have been remastered to a very high standard.

“This is serious, strongly projected and utterly engrossing, with a sparkling account of the finale.”

“Here is an absolute blinder from ICA Classics, featuring the great pianist Claudio Arrau... I have never heard the wondrous pianist so magisterial, so strong, firm and indisputably authoritative. He brings an entirely new perspective to the Chopin - sheer weight - and it really works. Arrau's philosophical Beethoven Four is spellbinding... ”

“The recording quality in the Funkhaus, Cologne is excellent...Arrau plays with huge distinction; poetic, controlled, the trills even and measured, powerful but also agitated, and leonine in the first movement cadenza [Beethoven]. The Klemperer-led Chopin makes this a very special acquisition for Arrau collectors.”
