Julius Katchen discusses Mozart's Concerto K.466
and Brahms’ Concerto No.1 with John Amis
BBC STUDIOS, LONDON, 15 DECEMBER 1967

More details

The American pianist Julius Katchen was a child prodigy who at age 11 performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Ormandy. In 1946 Katchen toured Europe, settling in Paris in late 1947 and became a frequent performer on the European concert platform. Katchen made a major study of Brahms during his career and this 1967 live broadcast of Brahms Piano Concerto No.1, with the distinguished German conductor Rudolf Kempe, reflects his deep understanding of this composer. This recording gives the collector the rare opportunity of hearing Katchen ‘live’ in comparison to his studio account made much earlier in 1959.

Brahms- Piano Concerto No.1 Finale

“It is a very fine performance, alternating nicely between raw virtuosity and a brooding ruminating quality that I think brings out the depth of Brahms’s thinking.”

“To hear Kathcen live in this work with Rudolf Kempe and the BBC SO is a gripping experience. The combination of temptestuousness and repose in the first movement is superbly caught, and Katchen's warm-hearted musicianship combined with his depth of tone and technical mastery make for an absorbing performance, superbly accompanied and preserved in good broadcast sound.”

“The 1967 performance is vintage Katchen in its bigness of conception, mercurial reflexes, and expressive fullness and generosity, with that distinctive metallic glint to his piano tone... Equally distinctive are the rich bronzed sculpting of the contrapuntal lines in the Adagio, and the passionate urgency of the second theme.”
