More details

‘I like recording very much because there are so many ways you can direct attention to aspects of the music that is just not possible in an everyday concert.’ (Leonard Bernstein, Gramophone, 1970) Featuring the only engagement that Bernstein undertook with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, this intense performance of Elgar’s ‘Enigma’ Variations from 1982 is brought to life on DVD. With fascinating rehearsal footage and a bonus interview conducted by Barry Norman, this Bernstein title is essential viewing.

This film document of a Stravinsky memorial concert one year after the composer’s death, comprises a spectacular version of the Rite of Spring, a brilliant account of the Capriccio and a deeply felt and thus very emotional version of the Symphony of Psalms.

In summary I found this DVD to be in turns thought-provoking, cringe-worthy, entertaining and uplifting. Quite a mix in such a short time-span.

“…Leonard Bernstein in his first concert with the BBC Symphony Orchestra… drives the orchestra to the limit of what is possible.”

"At last this DVD featuring rehearsal footage and Bernstein’s complete live performance gives us the lowdown on what really happened when Lenny met Auntie... An extreme clash of cultures played out as high psychological drama... Bernstein palpably feels every note to be right. And sincerity is one thing you can’t fake."
